Concerto for trombone and orchestra

The concerto was premiered by Juliusz Petrachowicz and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under Witold Rowicki on 18 December 1954. Part one (Lento espressivo, molto rubato – Allegro) is a sonata allegro preceded by a slow introduction – highly virtuoso show of trombone playing interspersed with striking “entries” of the orchestra. Part two – Largo, molto cantabile –is, as Tadeusz A. Zieliński writes, “in fact one of the most expressive and exalted” of all Serocki’s early works. The trombone melody here has a great, romantic expressive power. Part three (Allegro grazioso) is a scherzo-like fragment and introduces new qualities – lightness and playfulness. The finale – Allegro

The work is Kazimierz Serocki’s valuable contribution to the trombone literature, still popular with performers and often played during various competitions.
